The Innovation Behind Our Product
For decades, custom orthotics were made by pouring plaster into casts, manually correcting the positive model, then heating and forming plastic or carbon over it. CNC milling later improved this process by allowing foot models to be digitally modified and milled with greater precision. However, the final device still relied on thermoforming, where heat, material stretch and handling could introduce variation between the digital design and the finished orthotic.
Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) 3D printing changes that by manufacturing the orthotic directly from the digital design. A high-powered laser fuses polymer powder layer by layer, creating a device that more closely matches the prescribed model while allowing for complex geometries and more advanced designs. Over the past 18 months, we have found SLS manufacturing to deliver better-fitting orthotics, significantly improved repeatability, reduced unnecessary bulk and greater control over the final device.
